New accurate way to measure how a piece of content circulates online
New tools for measuring social media efficiency have been released by ShareThis, which reaches 400 million people a month through social media share buttons across content all over the web. One of the tools is Audience Index, which lets publishers understand and compare their social audiences against 850,000 other sites (and soon against categories), find out what types of influencers your site attracts, and find out how well you connect with influencers, listeners, and engaged customers. The other metric tools might be even more useful. That would be "Social Reach".

"We recently surveyed publishers (ours and others) and found that over 60% wanted (and were missing) social referral analytics," ShareThis explains on the company blog. "Social Reach measures the true value of shared media across the web by looking at outbound sharing and inbound social traffic and, in the process, gives proper credit to the listener/responder of a share as much as the original...

Affinion and others fined by Cuomo to pay $10.1 million for online discount scam
Six companies are charged by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to pay $10.1 million of fines and restitution after hundreds of thousands of consumers were tricked into joining discount clubs that carried hidden fees.

Affinion Group Inc and its Trilegiant unit will pay $8 million, including $5 million for a fund to reimburse defrauded customers and $3 million of fines and fees, Cuomo said.

Besides, five other retailers will also pay $2.1 million toward refunds and consumer education: Classmates Online Inc, FTD Inc, Avis Budget Group Inc, GameStop Corp and Avon Products Inc, the attorney general said.

In January Cuomo announced that he started an investigation into the discount club industry and issued subpoenas to 22 retailers that worked with three marketers offering discount programs: Affinion/Trilegiant, Vertrue Inc and Webloyalty.

He said shoppers who bought goods online would often get cash-back and discount offers from marketers and accept them without realizing they...

Ignorant companies are at risk of data theft via printers they dispose
While most of us know that when we upgrade our computers or mobile phones buying new ones and selling old models we should be careful not to have our sensitive data stored on the hardware we are getting rid of. But many people today do not know that other office equipment like fax machines and printers can also store our data.

We risk having our sensitive information reach the wrong hands as it was shown in the course of a recent News of the World investigation, which discovered sensitive information on office kit sold through a second-hand supplier.

You should know that multi-purpose copiers which double as scanners and printers, use hard drives to store data. Firms often dispose their old equipment without applying basic security precautions.

As part of an investigation the News of the World bought a number of second-hand copiers, one of which contained data left over from its use by defence supplier Cobham.

With the assistance of experts, the paper was able to recover documents...

British companies may suffer $22.16 billion losses because of Facebook
According to new research British companies suffer high losses because of workers who spent a lot of time on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking websites. British employment website MyJobGroup.co.uk said it polled 1,000 British workers and found that nearly six percent, or 2 million, of Britain's 34 million-strong workforce spent over an hour per day on social media while at work, amounting to more than one eighth of their entire working day.

"Our results clearly show that UK workers are spending increased time whilst at work on social media networks, which, left unchecked, could have negative repercussions on the productivity of many companies across the country," Managing Director of Myjobgroup.co.uk Lee Fayer said in a statement with the results of the survey.

According to the estimates of MyJobGroup.co.uk time lost on Facebook, Twitter and other social media networks could potentially be costing Britain up to 14 billion pounds ($22.16 billion).

China replaces Japan and becomes the world’s second largest economy
Japan has been replaced by China as the world’s second largest economy which is a result of 30 years of rapid growth. According to the projections made by the World Bank, Goldman Sachs and others depending on how fast its exchange rate rises, China is on course to overtake the United States and vault into the No.1 spot sometime around 2025.

China came close to surpassing Japan in 2009 and the disclosure by a senior official that it had now done so comes as no surprise. Indeed, Yi Gang, China's chief currency regulator, mentioned the milestone in passing in remarks published on Friday.

"China, in fact, is now already the world's second-largest economy," he said in an interview with China Reform magazine posted on the website of his agency, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange.

Cruising past Japan might give China bragging rights, but its per-capita income of about $3,800 a year is a fraction of Japan's or America's.

"China is still a developing country,...

GM will spend $3.5 billion out of Gov's bailout to buy Subprime Lender
General Motors has announced its intention to acquire a lender of auto loans AmeriCredit for $3.5 billion. According to company statement this can help it to lease more vehicles and increase sales to consumers with lower credit ratings.

“Our dealers have been telling us that not having an in-house finance arm hurt our ability to finance certain loans and leases,” Edward E. Whitacre Jr., G.M.’s chief executive, said in a conference call. “It hurt our ability to meet rising customer demand for G.M. cars and trucks. Now we’re going to fix that.”

However despite the delight of Gm, many analysts stay skeptical about the deal.

“If GM has $3.5 billion in cash to buy a financial institution, it seems like it should have paid back taxpayers first,” Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, said in a statement on his website. “After GM’s experience with GMAC, which left GM seeking a taxpayer bailout, you have to think the company and, in turn, the taxpayers would be better...
